There is a new cola commercial this year where a bunch of penguins are in a group under a big full moon dancing and partying to the Beach Boys singing "Merry Christmas Baby". A family of polar bears are peeking at the penguins from over a hill, when, surprisingly, Baby Bear (who is also drinking cola) slides down the snowy hill into the penguin party. The pengiuns see that Baby Bear is drinking the same brand of cola they are drinking, so Baby Bear and family are deemed cool enough to join the party under the stars.
I have some problems with this commercial
1. If I were a polar bear*, I would want to eat the penguins, not party with them.
2. Polar bears live exclusively at the North Pole, penguins live exclusively at the South pole.
3. It's SUMMER in the southern hemisphere**, so at the South pole, it's day all the time right now, there can't be any partying under the stars!
I'm willing to suspend disbelief about penguins and polar bears drinking cola, but this is just going too far.
I noticed these discrepancies to my friend angrynerdsrock when I first saw the commercial at her house. As I heard myself say these things aloud to another human being I was once again reminded of how much of a nerd I am. Yep.
Later, she sang some New Kids on the Block to me and it made me feel much better.
* which, as of the last time I checked, I am not
** I am assuming since there were many, many penguins at the party, that they were in the Antartic.
