Wines of the Week

The first two wines on my list are cleanskins, which I have never seen in the U.S. (albiet I have never looked for them in the U.S). A cleanskin wine is a bottle without a specific winery label. It is kind of like the "store brand" wine. Cleanskins can be hit or miss, but at less than $10 bucks a bottle, they are worth a try and can be really good.

Cleanskin Victorian Shiraz - 2002 - a fine shiraz. not exceptional. I brought it to the 'get to know your neighbors' drinks party on our street this week.

Cleanskin Yarra Valley Pinot Noir - The Yarra Valley is Victoria's most famous wine producing region, and this Pinot did not let me down. It was absolutely delicious!

Leasingham Bastion Clare Valley Reisling 2004 - It took 3 glasses of this wine over the course of 3 days for it to grow on me. My first impression was that it tasted like any generic white wine. I haven't tried very many reislings, but this one was a bit too acidic for my tastes. Not so bad that I had to dump it down the drain, but not so good that I would recommend running out and buying it this instant.

None of the wines this week cost more than $10 a bottle, and with the exception of the Pinot Noir, they tasted that cheap. Next week, all the selections will be OVER 10 dollars....we'll see what the differences will be!

I drinked Reislings a couple of times and didn't like them. I wouldn't trust a wine with a German sounding name. They taste like boxofwine. One of the problems is that if white wine is not chilled to recommended temperature it will taste like old grape juice.

Good to hear the cheap Pinot was a good catch. The good ones are usually expensive. Every time I read your comments on wine I want to travel to the west coast and drink good wine. Maybe I should go home and drink that bottle of Spanish Rioja I have.
