After everyone got their meals, the department head gave prizes to the top students in various undergrad years and programs. And the prize? Checks! The top students got money (a couple of hundred dollars) as a reward for being the best in their year.
Later, I found out that there were also cash prizes given to Ph.D. students at other times during the year. Cash prizes? How cool is that?
At my university in America, the only reward that I have heard about for Ph.D. students who do excellent jobs is the satisfaction of a job well done, and maybe a 'good work' from a professor and a free beer. Maybe.
What a different world it is down here!
