Today is Australia Day!
As an American, I was very curious about the day.
The radio and television ads claimed it was a day to celebrate Australia and the great things about being Australian.
My Australian mates said it was a day off from work and an excuse to have a BBQ, drink beers, and have a long weekend (this year the day falls on a Thursday, and many people are taking Friday off to have a 4-day weekend).
With a little investigation, I found that Australia day is the anniversary of the day in 1788 when Captain Phillip Cook raised the British Flag over Sydney Cove, proclaiming British Soveriegnty over the land and becoming the first governer.

There are parades, races, and many citizenship ceremonies today. Since the temperature is meant to soar into the 40s (over 104 F) today, I am heading to the beach!
Happy Australia Day!
