fast food nation

During my stay here in Australia, my eating habits have changed wildly. I am sure that this has something to do with it:

Drive thru fast food establishments I've seen in and around Melbourne, Australia, and that my Aussie friends can name off the top of their heads:

KFC
McDonald's
Red Rooster (a chicken place)
Hungry Jack's (Burger King)

That is a total of 4.

Drive thru fast food establishments I can name in the U.S.

KFC
McDonald's
Burger King
Taco Bell
Wendy's
Boston Market
Arby's
Long John Silver's
Jack in the Box
In N Out Burger
Sonic
Del Taco
Whataburger
Taco Cabana
Carl's Junior/Hardee's
Pei Wei

That is a total of 16.

Yikes.

I think it boils down to the sickening yet prevalent idea in American culture that any time that is spent not working or making money is a waste. So it would be better to grab a bag of greasy crap on the way home from work than spend an hour making yourself and your family a delicious, healthy, meal. Because really, why spend time treating yourself and your family well by sitting down together and really enjoying good food and conversation? That's precious time taken away from laying on the couch and having the television tell you about all the things that would make you happy if you just worked even more and made even more money so you could afford them.

is hunry jack's in england, too? i thought we had that here, as well. i recognize the name, and if it's not in the states it must be from when i lived in the uk.

...

i've recently seen kfc commercials about having a 'real family dinner' by bringing a bucket of chicken home! it's crazy.

What about White Castle? Dan would be so upset.

It wouldn't surprise me that there are Hungry Jack's in the UK.

I realized about an hour after I posted that I had forgotten about White Castle, but I have never actually lived in the same city as a White Castle, so it really wouldn't have been fair for me to add it to the list.
