Well, at least for me there were no leftovers. There was opportunity to make a plate to take home, but at that time I was too full to look at food and was distracted by the impending evacuation of my stomach contents.
Luckily, my intense needs for turkey were sated with 2 more turkey dinners over the weekend.
On Saturday, I went to neighbor's house to eat, and then on Sunday I cooked a turkey at my house!
Because even though I had plans for Thanksgiving, I wanted to have my faves as leftovers. I went to the store and got some potatoes, stuffing, gravy, and thought that I would get some turkey breast filets or something like that, but it ended up being cheaper to just buy a whole turkey. So I had people over for a third thanksgiving feast.
I cooked my turkey in a bag, with onion, celery, orange and apple pieces stuffed up it's rear. I think it turned out pretty well, except for the fact that I overcooked the bird and it got dry. Ack! I blame it on 2 things:
- I forgot to factor in carryover heat, so the temp went up about 10 degrees after taking it out of the oven
- I was unsure of my placement of the probe thermometer (I worry about bones), and so I put faith in the pop-up thingy in the breast of the bird. Such a mistake. I knew that the pop-up thingy is horribly ineffective. Why did I doubt you, trusty digital probe thermometer?
heh, probe.
The only other drama was that my butter had expired so I had to run to the store to get new after I had steamed potatoes for mashing. I came home and started to mash and then promptly made some potato dough. I was not happy. The potatoes were gummy and lumpy and made me want to cry. I am trying to figure out what went wrong. Was it the steaming? The cooling that happened because of the trip to the store? Was the mixer up to high? Woe.
Thank goodness DancingFish and V saved the day by bringing some instant spuds to the rescue!
Overall it was a good dinner. I have had some tasty leftovers, and have been able to make about 60 gallons of turkey soup. Yummy!

The turkey wasn't dry, it was yummy.
Mmmmm....you are making me want more turkey. I cheated and bought Country Crock Garlic Mashed Potatoes because I muck up mashing every time I try. They are so yummy.
Thanks Jeff, but in my heart I knew it could have been better.
Blondie- hmm...I will have to try those Country Crock potatoes soon. Even less work than instant potatoes.
I made mashed potatoes by boiling them and they turned out okay. Maybe steaming somehow removes moisture from the potato? Your turkey sounds good though - wish I had some leftovers!
Also, I saw this today and it made me think of you:
