green eggs and ham?

I was reading the paper today and found this story about scientists from Taiwan making a green flourscent protein* transgenic pig!

Now, I've seen some flourescent pink transgenic fish in my day (thanks to an awesome presentation by Snex), but green pigs!? How crazy is that!?

And, according to the article, them pigs are green both inside and out.

What would Sam I Am have to say about all this?

*for those of you who are not of the biologist persuasion, green flourescent protein (GFP) is a biological marker often used to identify and visualize particular genes or proteins in cells. There are also yellow and red flourescent proteins.

Wasn't it green EGGS and not the ham in Dr Suess' famous novel? So what we really need is GFP chickens that have the transgene located within the genome so that it is expressed in the egg (not just muscles or body tissues). Now that would be cool!!

And, BTW, YFP is a derivative of GFP (from a jellyfish) and RFP is a separate protein (from a coral anemone). I think. In case you wanted to know.

Hope you're having the best time in Australia!!!!!!!!!!

I seem to remember that the drawings in the book showed both the eggs and ham being green...but it has been awhile since I have picked up that classic piece of literature.

I think I knew where the different FPs came from, but thanks for the extra info!
